Our Ladies

Mercedes is an AKC Standard Poodle, and my little baby. We serve as a guardian home for Raintree Standard Poodles. She is about one-year-old (Born November 2018) and the perfect size, roughly 40 pounds, on the slender side. She is awesome with other dogs, cats, and children. I received this puppy from Raintree Standard Poodle’s when Mercedes was roughly 4 months old. No major health conditions or concerns at all. Very perky, energetic and sleeps well through the night. She crate trained easily, even though I was the one with the problem, I hate seeing her locked up 🙂

Her personality is amazing! Beyond adorable! She is very reactive to everything around her in an appropriate way. She plays outside gingerly with toys and chases our bunny and cat population without a problem; she has never injured another animal. She is very mild. She reacts amazingly to other dogs, and plays well with the ones that are at all interested in being played with.

I was blessed to find out that she has great potential to be a Diabetic Alert Dog. My seven-year-old son has Type One Diabetes and Mercedes has saved us from five different emergency room visits. Her keen sense of smell, and ability to alert me has helped us avoided keto acidosis five times. She can smell the excesses sugars in my son’s body and has woken me up twice, when I did not hear his alarm, or him talking because he was too sick to talk very loudly. She is a definite keeper!

She barks once or twice loudly to alert us when someone is at the door but it’s not over excessive when the person comes into the home. She will smell them and will jump up on Brittanie, from Raintree Standard poodles, when she is here because she is excited to see her but that is not a common reaction. If she can smell other animals on people, naturally like a dog would, she smells the human and attempts to play with them a little before resting.

She can sleep in the crate, stay in the crate for a few hours while running errands are going to church. She has stayed in the crate overnight several times with potty breaks in between. Remember that she is still considered a puppy and to avoid accidents we let her out twice a night but she goes right to bed when we tell her go to bed. 

When she’s not actively playing with the cat they snuggle on the couch or the floor in the sunshine. We just introduced a new puppy and her reaction has been amazing! They play with each other, snuggle together and sleep with each other as if they were siblings.

She comes when we say her name, she jumps up onto bed when I say up, and hops into the van for road trips when I tell her it’s time to go and the big sliding door opens. 

When we are driving in the van she tends to lie down between the front two seats so that my hand can rest on her head. She likes to sleep at my feet but will sleep on the couch if the door is closed or in her crate if she’s put there. 

I had never owned a Poodle before Mercedes, and I don’t think I will ever be able to do another breed again. I have had owned labs, a chewiennie Great Danes and Shepherd’s, but the Poodle has definitely taken the cake.
